Winter Solstice

The last few weeks have presented change and emotional stirrings for a lot of us. Astrologically there were important planetary shifts, which I have felt strongly, but I am not diving into as I am still trying to understand them myself. The full power Sagittarius full moon brought in potent energy of adventure, spontaneity and idealism. For me it was about being in acceptance of another's choices and learning to make decisions for me, without giving my power away too much to another.

And now Mercury in retrograde AGAIN, causing emotional stirring and big teachings. The lessons are intense and 'difficult' for  most of us because we are guided to go deeper into the way we communicate with SELF. On a very physical plane, we can be challenged technologically, testing our patience again and again. And on an emotional level, the retrograde gives us an opportunity to communicate from truth. By thinking twice before expressing what we need to say, refining it and filtering it through our hearts. And remembering that we are all riding this wave of learning.

And then this winter solstice coming up on Saturday 21st, invites us to focus on grounding and nurturing. We are asked to really look at what we are ready to let go of, as it is no longer serving us on our path. And begin to focus on something new, positive and complementary to our lives. On Saturday a short meditation focusing on this letting go and embracing, or even a fire ritual burning the old and calling in the new. Ritual can be a powerful form of integrating our intentions.

Finally, if life has thrown challenges, remembering to see those as a gift and an opportunity for growth and connection to something greater. Remember that there are no accidents and there is only room for more expansion in our lives.

Blessings and thanking you all for giving me the chance to also remind myself of this powerful learning journey.

Jealousy

What are the Yama's? The five yamas—kindness, truthfulness, abundance, continence, and self-reliance—are oriented towards our behaviours and allow us to coexist harmoniously with others.

Union of Opposites

Coming up to the New Moon in Gemini, we will dive into the union of opposites within our yoga class. And very appropriately, Yoga means union, and Hatha, translates as the opposites, the sun and the moon.

Non Stealing

Bringing awareness to the third Yogic Yama-Asteya. Non stealing.

Grace

Honoring those moments of synchronicity and trusting that the timing of everything in our lives is perfect, is a beautiful practice which can be strengthened through Yoga.

Art of Daily Living

Nitya Karma is the art of daily living. It is bringing awareness and the sacred to each moment in our lives. Even the obligations that seem so trivial, if we just use them as opportunities for devotion, for finding the joy within, then each moment in life is a meditation- each action becomes an act of spiritual service.

Yoga Philosophy

Yoga is the complete science of life that originated in India many thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development in the world and encompassing body, mind and spirit. The ancient yogis had profound understanding of man’s essential nature and if what he needs to live in harmony with himself and his environment. The yogic philosophy perceives the body as a vehicle, the mind as the driver, the soul as mans true identity and action, emotion and intelligence as the three forces which pull the body vehicle. In order for there to be integrated development these forces need to be in balance. Taking into account the interrelationship between body and mind, the yogis formulated a unique method for maintaining this balance-a method that combines all movements that you need for physical health with the breathing and meditation techniques that ensures peace of mind.

Compiled by the sage Pantajali in the Yoga Sutras, the eight limbs of Raja yoga, are a progressive series of steps of disciples which purify the body and mind, and ultimately leading the yogi to enlightenment.

The Yamas, or restraints are divided into five moral injunctions, aimed at destroying the lower nature; non violence; truthfulness in word, thought and deed; non stealing; moderation in all things; and non possessiveness. The Niymas or observances are also divided into five. Fostering positive qualities they consist of: purity; contenment; austerity; study of scared texts; and constantly living with an awareness of the divine presence. Asanas are the postures and Pranayama is the breath. Pratyahara means drawing the senses inward in order to still the mind, in preparation for Dharana or concentration. Dharana leads to Dyhana or meditation, culminating in Samadhi or super consciousness.
